Justice Maryann Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello in Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his bail application. This follows his arraignment in a N110bn money laundering case brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In her ruling on Tuesday, Justice Anenih described an earlier bail application filed by Bello’s legal team as premature, stating it was submitted when the defendant was neither in custody nor before the court, rendering it incompetent.
The case, which also involves two other defendants, has been adjourned to January 29, 30, and February 25 and 27, 2025, for further hearing. The EFCC alleges that the former governor engaged in financial mismanagement during his tenure.

Bello’s remand comes as part of ongoing efforts to address high-profile corruption cases in Nigeria. The court proceedings will continue next year to determine the outcome of the allegations.
