A former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Kofo Bucknor-Akerele, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s purported focus on re-election in 2027, calling it a misplaced priority. Speaking on a television programme, she urged the president to concentrate on resolving Nigeria’s deepening socio-economic challenges instead.
Bucknor-Akerele, who served as Tinubu’s deputy from 1999 to 2002, said young Nigerians are growing increasingly frustrated due to unemployment and hardship. She warned that ignoring these concerns could lead to unrest during the next general elections.

She added that Nigeria needs urgent action to address its struggling economy, education, health, and security sectors. Bucknor-Akerele is a member of The Patriots, a group led by former Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku, advocating for a new constitution to secure the country’s future.
The former deputy governor said there is nationwide discontent with the current state of affairs and called on the Tinubu administration to adopt meaningful reforms. She warned that failure to act decisively could spell disaster for the country.
