Residents have accused some villages in Mashegu Local Government Area of harbouring bandits. In May this year, police arrested the village head of Guiwa and 13 others from surrounding communities, following allegations that they provided shelter to armed groups.
Meanwhile, renewed attacks in parts of Niger North have forced residents of farming communities in Mariga, Magama, Kontagora, Mashegu, Borgu and Rijau to flee their homes. Police confirmed that a patrol officer was injured and a vehicle damaged in an encounter with gunmen along the Ibbi–Bussa road on Monday.
