Gunmen have killed a former Peoples Democratic Party House of Assembly candidate for Otukpo Akpa constituency, Igbabe Ochi, and others in an early morning attack on Otobi community in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.
Residents said the attack occurred at about half past one on Tuesday morning, barely two days after a kidnap attempt in the Ekwu Ora Odaba area of the community was foiled by local volunteer guards. Locals said suspected armed attackers stormed the area shortly after community patrols withdrew.
The President of the Otobi Community Development Association, John Anyebe, said the attackers accessed the community through the railway bridge from the Ijami axis and opened fire near a transformer junction where Ochi and others were seated, before looting shops for food items. He said similar attacks had occurred in the community in April and May last year.

The Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the incident but said four people were killed, adding that investigations were ongoing to arrest the perpetrators. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security and Internal Affairs, Chief Joseph Har, also confirmed the attack, while the lawmaker representing Otukpo Akpa constituency, Kennedy Angbo, called for intensified security operations in the area.
