Former President Goodluck Jonathan Warns Against One-Party State in Nigeria

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan has warned that attempts to turn Nigeria into a one-party state through political manipulation could plunge the country into crisis. He issued the warning on Wednesday during a tribute and memorial lecture held in Abuja in honour of the late Ijaw leader, Edwin Clark.

Jonathan noted that while one-party systems have worked in some countries like Tanzania under Julius Nyerere, they were carefully designed with clear national objectives. He stressed that any move towards a single-party structure in Nigeria must be well-planned by experts and not driven by backdoor political manoeuvres.

The former president’s comments come amid growing concerns over recent defections from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress, particularly in Delta State. Prominent figures including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa have recently switched allegiance.

In response to mounting criticism, the presidency has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu is pushing for a one-party state, describing such allegations as false and exaggerated.
