At least four people have been killed and hundreds arrested during violent protests in Angola’s capital, Luanda, over a recent hike in fuel prices. Police confirmed the deaths and said 400 people were arrested overnight, following earlier detentions of around 100 people on Monday.

The unrest began after the government raised the price of diesel by 30 percent, sparking anger among commuters who rely heavily on minibus taxis. Gunfire was heard in parts of the city, while shops were looted and public transport came to a standstill.

Deputy Police Commissioner Mateus Rodrigues said 45 shops were vandalised, with 25 private cars and 20 public buses damaged. Protesters also targeted banks, blocked roads, and clashed with police in several neighbourhoods including Cazenga and Rocha Pinto.

The protests, which began on July 1, are part of wider anger over Angola’s phased removal of fuel subsidies. Human Rights Watch has accused security forces of using excessive force, including tear gas and rubber bullets, during earlier demonstrations.
