The Senate has formally received four senators who have defected from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress, further strengthening the APC’s dominance in the upper chamber.
Those who switched allegiance are Ekong Samson and Etim Bassey from Akwa Ibom, as well as Francis Fadahunsi and Olubiyi Fadeyi from Osun State. Their defection was marked by a brief suspension of Senate rules to welcome top APC figures present in the chamber.

Among those in attendance were APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru, Osun State party chairman Tajudeen Lawal, members of the House of Representatives, and former minister Chris Ngige. The APC now holds 72 seats in the 10th Senate, up from 50 in June 2023.
The PDP’s representation has fallen to 26, following recent defections also involving the Labour Party and the New Nigeria Peoples Party. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele described the development as a reflection of democratic values in action.
