Four People Survive Cessna 172 Plane Crash at Owerri Airport

Four people survived after a Cessna 172 aircraft operated by Skypower Express crash-landed at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred at 6:58 p.m. as the aircraft approached Runway 17, according to the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau.

The aircraft, with registration number 5N-ASR, was travelling from Kaduna International Airport to Port Harcourt International Airport when the crew declared an emergency and diverted to Owerri. Airport emergency teams, in collaboration with airport police patrol units, responded promptly and rescued all occupants.

Two of the crew members were in stable condition, while the other two, initially unconscious, were evacuated to a hospital for medical attention. There was no post-crash fire, and flight operations at the airport were not disrupted, with the runway remaining operational.

The NSIB has commenced a formal investigation into the crash. Arrangements are underway to recover and examine the aircraft wreckage. The Director-General of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., expressed sympathy to the airline and relief that no lives were lost.
