Fresh Market Fire Hits Anambra as State Records Sixth Blaze in One Week

An early morning fire has destroyed shops at Nkwo Enugu-Ukwu Market in Anambra’s Njikoka Local Government Area, marking the sixth fire incident in the state within a week. The blaze, which began around 3am on Friday, affected provision shops and roofing material stores. Early findings suggest the fire was triggered by an electrical surge following sudden power restoration.

Firefighters arrived promptly and contained the incident, with authorities confirming no casualties. The state has seen a string of recent fires, including a tanker explosion near Ozubulu and a factory blaze in Nnewi. Another commercial building at Nodu Market in Awka South was also gutted earlier in the week.

The Anambra Fire Service has urged traders to undertake urgent electrical safety checks and switch off appliances when closing for the day.
