A new oil spill has been reported on Oil Mining Lease 29 in the Tora area of Nembe, Bayelsa State, operated by Nembe Exploration and Production Company Limited, formerly Aiteo Eastern E&P. The spill, which occurred on October 1, has polluted the Santa Barbara River and affected nearby communities that depend on it for their livelihood.
In a letter to the company, the Opu Nembe Kingdom, through its legal counsel, criticised the proposed October 6 date for a joint investigation visit, insisting on October 9 to allow for proper representation.
