World leaders have congratulated Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), on his victory in the German elections. However, reactions have been mixed, with some wary of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which secured its best result yet with 20.8% of the vote, finishing second.
Merz, now set to become Germany’s next chancellor, faces the challenge of forming a coalition government while steering Europe’s largest economy toward growth. European Council President Antonio Costa expressed hopes for stronger European cooperation, while EU High Representative Kaja Kallas urged a swift government formation to maintain stability.

U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed Merz’s victory, attributing it to voter dissatisfaction with liberal policies on energy and immigration. Meanwhile, the Kremlin took a cautious stance, stating that Russia would assess its relationship with Germany’s new leadership in due course.
