FRSC Reports Over 3,900 Deaths as Road Crashes Rise by 10 Percent Nationwide

The Federal Road Safety Corps says road crashes in Nigeria rose by over 10 percent in 2025, with 3,915 people killed between January and September, compared to 3,811 during the same period last year. Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed revealed the figures in Port Harcourt at the launch of the 2025 Ember Months Road Safety Campaign themed “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving.”

Mohammed said 7,715 road crashes were recorded this year against 7,011 in 2024, attributing the rise to unsafe driving practices. He noted that Rivers State, which hosted the campaign flag-off, recorded a 35 percent drop in fatalities during the same period. The Corps Marshal said FRSC personnel had been mobilised nationwide to ensure safer travels through intensified patrols, enforcement, and public awareness.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara, represented by Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba, commended the FRSC’s efforts and urged Nigerians to view road safety as a shared responsibility. He said safety on both roads and waterways must be treated as a daily duty rather than a seasonal concern.

The governor pledged his administration’s commitment to investing in infrastructure and working with security agencies, transport unions, and communities to curb unsafe behaviours such as speeding, drunk driving, and neglecting life jackets in riverine areas.
