Gabon Suspends National Team, Removes Aubameyang Following AFCON Loss

The Gabonese football federation has suspended the country’s national team and banned star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The decision was taken after the team’s poor performance at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The country’s sports minister Simplice-Desire Mamboula announced the disbandment on national television.

The federation did not immediately provide a timeline for lifting the suspension. It said efforts are ongoing to resolve the issues affecting Gabonese football.

Gabon’s President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema stated that the team had two major problems – lack of method and dispersion of resources,.

He promised “strong and structural decisions” to “restore rigour, responsibility and ambition in the governance of national sport”.
