Gabon to Hold Presidential Elecations on April 12, Ending Military Rule

Gabon’s Council of Ministers has announced that presidential elections will take place on April 12, marking the end of military rule that began with a coup in 2023. The date was confirmed in the minutes of a recent cabinet meeting, offering a clear path towards a return to civilian governance.

Brice Oligui Nguema, who assumed power after ousting President Ali Bongo in the coup, is overseeing the transition. The coup, the eighth in West and Central Africa between 2020 and 2023, brought an end to the Bongo family’s decades-long rule over the country.

In November 2023, Gabon’s citizens voted in favour of a new constitution, a promise made by the military leaders to restore constitutional order. The new constitution limits the president to two seven-year terms, abolishes the position of prime minister, and prohibits dynastic succession.

Despite these reforms, some analysts remain cautious, fearing that the military government may use the electoral process to secure continued control over the country.
