Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libya’s former leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, has reportedly been shot dead at the age of 53. Libya’s state news agency said his death was confirmed on Tuesday by the head of his political team, though accounts of how and where he died differ.
His lawyer told the AFP news agency that a four-man commando unit carried out an assassination at his home in the city of Zintan, while his sister told Libyan television that he died near the Libya-Algeria border. No group has claimed responsibility and Libyan authorities have yet to issue an official statement.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was once seen as his father’s heir and played a key role in Libya’s rapprochement with the West before the 2011 uprising. He was accused of involvement in the violent suppression of protests, jailed by a militia in Zintan for almost six years, and wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity.
