At least 232 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched its offensive following the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, according to a report by Brown University’s Costs of War project.
The study highlights that the toll in Gaza exceeds journalist fatalities recorded across major conflicts, including both World Wars, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and the post-9/11 war in Afghanistan combined.

By comparison, World Wars I and II saw a total of 69 journalists killed, while 19 have died in Ukraine since Russia’s 2022 invasion.
Most of those killed in Gaza have been local reporters. Last week, Palestinian journalists Hossam Shabat and Mohammed Mansour died in Israeli airstrikes.
Israel has claimed some of the journalists killed, including Shabat, were affiliated with militant groups such as Hamas, though the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has dismissed these allegations.
