More than 50,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the start of Israel’s military campaign, according to figures released by the territory’s health ministry. The toll represents around 2.1% of Gaza’s pre-war population of 2.3 million—approximately one in every 46 people.
The UN’s Human Rights Office previously reported in November that nearly 70% of verified casualties over a six-month period were women and children.

A study published in January by The Lancet, one of the oldest peer-reviewed medical journals, suggested the true number of deaths could be significantly higher than official figures, with estimates indicating a potential undercount of up to 41%.
The health ministry also reported 39 deaths within a 24-hour period on Sunday, bringing the total number of fatalities to 673 since Israel resumed military operations on Tuesday. The conflict has led to mounting humanitarian concerns as casualties continue to rise.
