German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned of the risk of a military escalation in the Middle East ahead of talks between Iran and the United States scheduled for Friday in Oman. Speaking at a news conference in Doha on Thursday during a tour of the Gulf region, Merz said growing concerns about a further escalation with Iran had dominated his discussions with regional leaders.
Merz urged Iran to end what he described as aggressive actions and to engage constructively in talks, saying Germany would work to de-escalate tensions and promote regional stability. The warning comes as officials from Tehran and Washington prepare to meet in Muscat, with mediators from Qatar, Turkiye and Egypt proposing a framework that includes limits on Iran’s uranium enrichment.

The United States says diplomacy will be the focus of the talks, though Washington insists discussions should also cover Iran’s ballistic missile programme and its regional activities. Iran has rejected any expansion of the agenda beyond its nuclear programme, warning that broader demands could jeopardise the negotiations, as the region braces for possible further military confrontation.
