Seventeen young Nigerian women, trafficked to Ghana under false pretences, have been safely repatriated to Nigeria, while five individuals suspected of trafficking have been detained.
In a statement issued Sunday, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Head of Media and Public Relations at the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, revealed that the women, aged between 18 and 29, hailed from multiple states, including Anambra, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Imo, Edo, and Ebonyi.
Lured to Ghana with promises of employment, the women were subsequently coerced into exploitative conditions and sworn to secrecy. The rescue operation was a collaborative effort between Ghana’s Anti-Human Trafficking Police, the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation in Ghana, and the Nigerian High Commission in Accra.
The operation, carried out in Kpone Katamanso, Tema, marked one of the most significant coordinated arrests, leading to the apprehension of five suspected traffickers.
