More than 250 media outlets in over 70 countries have staged a coordinated front-page protest over the killing of journalists in the war in Gaza. The action, organised by Reporters Without Borders and supported by campaign group Avaaz, comes amid rising concern for press freedom.
RSF says about 220 journalists have been killed in Gaza since the war began in October 2023. Al Jazeera puts the figure at 278, including ten of its staff. The protest follows the recent deaths of five journalists in Israeli air strikes on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.

Earlier in August, Al Jazeera’s Anas al-Sharif and six other journalists were killed in a strike near al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. Among those who died were three Al Jazeera staff members: correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh and cameramen Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal.
RSF says it has filed four complaints at the International Criminal Court alleging war crimes against journalists by the Israeli army. It is also calling for international access to Gaza, evacuation routes for reporters, and an end to impunity for attacks on the press.
