Global Sumud Aid Flotilla Approaches Gaza Amid Fears of Israeli Interception

An international aid flotilla carrying activists from over 40 countries is now less than 400 nautical miles from Gaza and expected to arrive by September 30 or October 1, weather permitting. The Global Sumud Flotilla, comprising around 50 vessels, set sail earlier this month to break Israel’s blockade and deliver medical supplies to the besieged enclave.

Organisers say the convoy has been accompanied at different points by Greek, Italian, and Spanish naval vessels, though Israel has a record of intercepting ships attempting to reach Gaza. Activists insist they are determined to complete their mission despite possible risks.

The voyage comes as Gaza endures worsening famine conditions, with Israel maintaining a full closure of crossings since March. More than 66,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed since October 2023, leaving the territory devastated by bombardment, hunger, and disease.
