Global Terrorism Index: Nigeria Records 43 Percent Increase in Attacks

Nigeria has dropped to fourth position in the 2025 Global Terrorism Index, following a rise in terrorist attacks across the country. The report shows that incidents increased by about 43 percent, reflecting ongoing security challenges.

According to the index, the rise in attacks has been linked to activities of insurgent and armed groups operating in parts of northern Nigeria. The report highlights continued violence in the North East and other affected regions.

Nigeria climbed two places in the ranking, moving from sixth in 2024 to fourth in 2025. The report revealed that Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram were responsible for the majority of the terror attacks in the country in 2025. Civilians were the most targeted group, accounting for 67% of the attacks, while the military faced 19%.
