Goodluck Jonathan criticises electoral courts

News - by RadioNow / Apr. 13th, 2021

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says the act of electoral courts declaring the winners of election is an undemocratic practice, as he advocates the need for legislation that will prevent the courts from having such powers in elections.

Speaking with journalists yesterday in Abuja, he explains that the ballot papers should be the only means of choosing political leaders, adding that when a politician or the electoral system is found wanting, the courts should only be made to order for a re-run and not to declare a winner.

The former president also noted the greatest failure of the Nigerian government, as the failure of the local government, while outlining his efforts to increase women participation in politics during his tenure as head of state.
