Gov. Soludo Backs NAFDAC’s Crackdown on Fake Drugs in Onitsha

Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo has endorsed NAFDAC’s ongoing crackdown on counterfeit drugs in Onitsha, following the agency’s closure of the Bridgehead market over fake pharmaceuticals.

During a visit to the Ọgbọ Ọgwụ drug market, Soludo reiterated his support for the clean-up exercise, emphasising the need for a society where citizens can access safe medicine.

Regulatory officers discovered hidden stockpiles of counterfeit and controlled substances in shops within the nearby Plumbing Materials Market, prompting its immediate closure.

Speaking at the site, the governor called for stricter federal oversight on drug importation, urging authorities to go beyond seizure and destruction by investigating the sources of illicit drugs. He also advocated for self-policing measures within the pharmaceutical industry to prevent the circulation of substandard medicines.

Governor Soludo set a deadline of less than 10 days for the completion of ongoing search operations, stressing the urgency of ensuring a safer drug market in Anambra State.
