The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has urged the Awujale Chiefs in Council to ensure a fair and transparent process in selecting the next Awujale of Ijebuland. The stool became vacant following the passing of Oba Sikiru Adetona on 13 July at the age of 91, after more than 65 years on the throne.
Speaking after a meeting with the Chiefs in Council at Iperu, Governor Abiodun said the succession process must strictly follow the laws of Ijebuland. He emphasised that all qualified candidates should be given equal opportunity, assuring that his administration would support whoever emerges from the kingmakers’ decision.

The governor expressed confidence in the council, describing its members as respected figures who had helped sustain peace during the reign of the late monarch. He dismissed speculation of division, stating that the chiefs were united and committed to preserving the traditions of Ijebuland.
Governor Abiodun added that the meeting was also an opportunity to commiserate with the council over the loss of Oba Adetona, while expressing hope that the succession process would be free of rancour and uphold the revered legacy of the late Awujale.
