Greenland Forms New Coalition Government Ahead of US Vice President’s Visit

Greenland has announced a new coalition government, just hours before a visit by US Vice President JD Vance to the Arctic island, which President Donald Trump has previously expressed interest in acquiring.

The new administration will be led by Jens-Frederik Nielsen, leader of the pro-business Democrats, who has called for a broad political alliance to present a united front amid renewed pressure from Washington. The party, which supports a gradual move towards independence from Denmark, secured the largest share of seats in the March 11 election, tripling its representation to 10.

Since taking office in January, President Trump has reiterated his desire to bring Greenland under US control, citing strategic interests, a position widely opposed by the island’s population.
