Four people were killed on Monday as gunmen launched a fatal attack on residents and security operatives in Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Area, and Abatete in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The assailants, suspected to be enforcing the Monday sit-at-home order, targeted residents and vigilante operatives in the two communities.
Eyewitnesses report that the attackers arrived in Abatete at about 8:30 a.m., firing indiscriminately before moving to Ukpo Roundabout, where they continued their assault. Several vehicles belonging to the Anambra State Vigilante Operatives were set ablaze, and four vigilante members were reportedly killed during the attack.
Videos circulating on social media show graphic scenes, including bodies of victims lying in pools of blood. Among the injured is the President-General of Abatete Community, Chimame Ezigbo, who was shot and rushed to the hospital for treatment, along with another injured vigilante operative.
The Anambra State Police Command while confirming the incident through its spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga added that police operatives had been deployed to the area and promised to release more information following a full investigation.
