Gunmen stage another attack on police station in Imo state

Another police station, the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area – just about an hour and a half’s drive from the state capital was attacked by a large number of unknown gunmen who arrived in buses and freed all the suspects in detention before setting the building ablaze. The police public relations officer in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu confirmed this to the media yesterday but insists that the armoury wasn’t breached.

The attack on the police station comes a couple of hours after vice president Yemi Osinbajo was in Imo state to assess the level of damage done at the Nigeria Correctional service facility and the state police headquarters. He was in the company of the minister of internal affairs, Rauf Aregbesola and the immediate past inspector general of police, Mohammed Adamu, who were received by the governor of the state, Hope Uzodinma.

Addressing the press, Vice president Yemi Osinbajo says the attack is an assault on the welfare and well-being of citizens.

Minister of the interior, Rauf Aregbesola describes the attack as a declaration of war. While calling on all escaped criminals to return to prison, he promised amnesty to those who return voluntarily.

In a statement released by the immediate past inspector general of police, Mohammed Adamu, the former IGP accused members of the indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) of being behind the attack on the Imo police headquarters, and the Nigeria correcional service facility in Imo state. An accusation that they deny.
