The Gwoza Youth Forum has dismissed claims of a Christian genocide in Gwoza, describing the allegation as misleading and harmful to ongoing reconciliation efforts. Speaking in Maiduguri, the forum’s chairman, Bulama Ali Haruna, said Boko Haram’s 15-year campaign devastated Muslim and Christian communities alike, with attacks cutting across villages long known for interfaith coexistence.
He noted that Gwoza and surrounding areas were overrun by the insurgents in 2014, with religious and traditional leaders from both faiths among those killed. Hundreds of mosques, dozens of churches, homes, markets, schools, and health facilities were destroyed, while entire communities—from Pulka to Kirawa—suffered repeated assaults.

Mr. Haruna warned that framing the tragedy as a targeted religious genocide distorts the facts and risks deepening divisions. He urged stakeholders to prioritise truth, peace, and responsible public communication.
