Hamas Confirms Death of Spokesman Abu Obeida, Others

The Palestinian group Hamas says its armed wing spokesperson, Abu Obeida, has been killed during Israel’s war in Gaza earlier this year. The confirmation was made on Monday by the al-Qassam Brigades.

Hamas also said Mohammed Sinwar, the group’s Gaza chief and younger brother of former Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, was killed in the conflict. It confirmed the deaths of Mohammed Shabanah, head of the Rafah Brigade, and two other senior figures, Hakam al-Issi and Raed Saad.

The Israeli military had said in May that Mohammed Sinwar was killed, and later announced it had also killed Abu Obeida. Hamas said Abu Obeida’s real name was Huthaifa al-Kahlout.

Abu Obeida was a prominent voice for Hamas in Gaza, issuing regular statements on military developments, ceasefire violations and prisoner exchanges. His last public statement was released in September, as Israel intensified military operations in Gaza City.
