Nigeria’s House of Representatives has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, following prolonged political unrest.
On Tuesday, the president suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months, appointing a sole administrator to oversee the state during the period.

Under the Nigerian Constitution, a state of emergency requires the approval of two-thirds of the National Assembly to take effect. During Thursday’s plenary, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen called for a voice vote, with the majority in favour.
Abbas later confirmed that 243 members were present, according to the official attendance register.
Earlier, Representative Ali Isa proposed an amendment to shorten the six-month duration, a motion seconded by Representative Miriam Onuoha.
