The House of Representatives Committee on South East Development has called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Chris Nkwonta, the committee chairman, made the demand during the panel’s inaugural meeting on Wednesday at the National Assembly.
Nkwonta also commended President Bola Tinubu for signing the bill to establish the South East Development Commission (SEDC). He expressed hope that the commission would help drive meaningful development in the region.

Recall that in June 2024, 50 members of the House of Representatives, as well as the minority caucus, urged President Tinubu to facilitate Kanu’s release.
In July 2024, the South-East Governors’ Forum and regional senators also called for Kanu’s freedom. Governors are expected to meet with President Tinubu, while senators consulted with the Attorney-General of the Federation to discuss the matter.
