The House of Representatives has taken a significant step towards establishing a National Local Government Electoral Commission, LGEC, to oversee local council elections across the country.
A bill seeking to amend the Constitution to create the independent electoral body passed its second reading during Tuesday’s plenary session, presided over by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.

Sponsored by Deputy Speaker Kalu and eight other lawmakers, the proposed legislation aims to empower the LGEC to organise, conduct, and supervise elections for local government Chairmen, Vice Chairmen, and Councillors nationwide. House Leader Julius Ihonvbere presented the bill for second reading.
Supporters of the bill argue that the commission will enhance the credibility, transparency, and fairness of local elections, strengthening democratic governance at the grassroots level. If enacted, the legislation could mark a fundamental shift in Nigeria’s electoral process by ensuring a more independent and accountable system for local government polls.
