Following a motion sponsored by Sunday Nnamchi from Enugu State, the House of Representatives has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to relocate its offices in local government areas to “secure and neutral” locations.
Mr. Nnamchi expressed concerns about the safety of INEC offices located within council areas, highlighting that they have been targeted by hoodlums in recent years, leading to the destruction of electoral materials and compromising the commission’s independence in conducting elections.
The motion received unanimous support during a voice vote led by the Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and there was no debate on the issue. In light of this decision, the House urged INEC to allocate funds in its 2025 budget proposal to facilitate the relocation of its offices.
The House also mandated its relevant committees to ensure compliance with this directive and to report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
