House of Representatives Moves to Expand Polytechnic Mandate

Nigeria’s House of Representatives is considering amendments to the Federal Polytechnics Act in a bid to broaden the scope of polytechnics, strengthen academic governance, and introduce Bachelor of Technology B.Tech Honours degrees.  

The Federal Polytechnics Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025, sponsored by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and lawmaker Faud Laguda, aims to modernise the existing legislation to align with current educational and industry demands.

A key provision in the proposed amendment is the introduction of B.Tech Honours degrees for holders of National Diplomas, subject to approval by the National Universities Commission.  

The bill also seeks to reform polytechnic governance, granting the National Board for Technical Education and the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria representation on governing councils.
