The House of Representatives has resolved to mediate in the ongoing dispute between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU. The decision, led by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, followed a motion by Lagos lawmaker Sesi Whingan during Tuesday’s plenary, seeking a lasting and transparent resolution to the impasse.
ASUU began a two-week nationwide strike on October 13, citing government failure to meet its demands. The action has paralysed teaching in most federal universities. In response, the Education Minister, Dr Tunji Alausa, directed vice-chancellors to enforce the ‘no work, no pay’ rule and submit compliance reports within a week.

The Nigeria Labour Congress has backed ASUU, describing the strike as a justified reaction to neglect, while lawmakers urge both sides to return to dialogue.
