House of Representatives Speaker, Tajuddeen Abbas, has highlighted a widespread lack of understanding among Nigerians regarding the legislature’s role in a democratic society, calling for increased public education on the matter.
At the closing ceremony of the 2024 national quiz competition on ‘The Legislature and Democracy,’ hosted by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies in Abuja, Speaker Abbas emphasised that the event aimed to enlighten young Nigerians on the legislative branch’s duties. He underscored the importance of democratic principles, including checks and balances across the government’s three branches.
Addressing the youth, he urged them to prepare for future leadership roles across all sectors, not solely in politics. He encouraged them to recognize the power of their voices in shaping the nation and driving positive change.
