Nigeria’s former military ruler, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (Retired), popularly known as IBB, has asserted that his administration played a pivotal role in expanding press freedom and liberalising media ownership in the country.
In his newly published autobiography, ‘A Journey in Service’, the former head of state suggests that policies introduced during his tenure laid the foundation for a more independent media landscape. He argues that Nigeria’s democratic progress owes much to the media’s ability to uphold freedom of expression.

Babangida maintains that his government not only opened up media ownership but also demystified the industry, making it more accessible. He further notes that, even in retirement, he has remained available for media engagements, underscoring the importance of journalistic involvement in national discourse.
