The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has told the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja that it is detaining former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai to conclude an investigation into alleged corruption between 2015 and 2023.
In court filings dated 26 February, the commission said it received a petition alleging financial misconduct involving loans, procurement, and transfers under his administration, and began preliminary investigations before inviting him on 9 February. It said he was served on 12 February after returning to Nigeria and was later arrested on 18 February following his release from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The ICPC said it obtained a 14-day remand order on 19 February from Magistrate Okechukwu Akweke of the Bwari Chief Magistrate Court in Abuja, allowing it to hold Mr El-Rufai pending investigation into allegations of money laundering and abuse of office. The order is due to expire on 5 March, and the commission says it intends to file charges before then.

Mr El-Rufai has asked the High Court to declare his arrest and detention unlawful and to award him one billion naira in damages, describing the investigation as politically motivated. The ICPC denies breaching his rights and has urged the court to dismiss his suit and allow it to complete its inquiry.
