ICRC, Nigerian Red Cross Deny Supporting Armed Groups in Northern Nigeria

The International Committee of the Red Cross and the Nigerian Red Cross Society have denied claims that they are providing support to armed groups in northern Nigeria. The organisations were responding to social media reports alleging that aid was delivered to insurgents in Sambisa forest in Borno State.

In a joint statement issued on Monday, both organisations described the allegations as misleading and contrary to their humanitarian principles. They said such claims could undermine their work and prevent vulnerable people from receiving essential assistance.

The groups stated that their operations are carried out independently, neutrally and impartially, and are focused on assisting civilians affected by conflict. They also clarified that while they engage in humanitarian dialogue with all parties, they do not provide financial, logistical or other support to any armed group.
