The International Energy Agency, IEA, has reaffirmed that Nigeria’s vast gas reserves are central to closing Africa’s energy access gap, where nearly 600 million people remain without electricity. During a visit to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, the Agency noted that even full development of the continent’s gas would add only 0.5% to global emissions, underscoring Africa’s right to expand energy supply.
The IEA commended Nigeria’s move to embed decarbonisation standards into upstream project approvals and its insistence on green strategies in field development plans. It pledged technical support, including access to market intelligence, joint workshops on gas monetisation and strengthened data exchange.
