The Inspector General of Police has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to dismiss a rights enforcement suit filed by the former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai.
El-Rufai is seeking one billion naira in compensation against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, the Chief Magistrate Court of the Federal Capital Territory, the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General of the Federation. The suit challenges a search carried out at his residence in Asokoro, Abuja, by law enforcement agents.
In a counter affidavit, the police chief said the search was conducted under a warrant issued by a competent court and in line with statutory powers to investigate and prosecute offences. He also accused the former governor of attempting to use the lawsuit to shield himself from investigation.

At Thursday’s hearing, El-Rufai’s lawyer, Ubong Akpan, told the court he had yet to respond to the police counter affidavit. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik adjourned the case until March 25 and ordered that hearing notices be served on the Chief Magistrate of the FCT and the Attorney General of the Federation, who were not represented in court.
