The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, says the force cannot entirely withdraw officers from protecting Very Important Personalities, stressing that some industrialists and senior officials require security. Speaking in Abuja at a meeting with Border Patrol Commanders, IGP Egbetokun, who described Nigeria’s land and maritime boundaries as ‘vast and complex’, warned that weak border control fuels arms smuggling, trafficking, and terrorist infiltration. He cited last year’s seizure of a container from Turkey carrying 800 rifles and 100,000 rounds of ammunition as evidence of the scale of the threat.
The IGP called for stronger collaboration with Customs, Immigration, and the military, urging adoption of modern surveillance and data tools. He also pledged better welfare, mobility, and housing for frontline officers.
