The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an investigation into allegations that the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) used excessive force during the August #EndBadGovernance protests, leading to deaths and arrests of demonstrators. The protests, held between August 1 and 10, sought to challenge government policies across the country.
Amnesty International, in a report titled “Bloody August: Nigerian Government’s Violent Crackdown on #EndBadGovernance Protests”, accused the police of killing at least 24 people, including 20 young adults, two children, and an older person, in states such as Borno, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, and Niger. Isa Sanusi, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, claimed the death toll could be higher, alleging that authorities attempted to cover up the incidents. He described the actions of security personnel as an “unbelievable display of lawlessness.”

In response, NPF spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi issued a press statement on Monday, describing Amnesty’s allegations as “falsified and confusing.” He, however, confirmed that the IGP had directed an investigation to determine the veracity of the claims.
