The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has cautioned officers against unlawful detention, insisting that violations will carry consequences.
In a statement issued by Force spokesman Assistant Commissioner of Police Muyiwa Adejobi, the police chief reminded officers of the constitutional limits on detention periods, citing Sections 34 and 35 of the Nigerian Constitution, which uphold the rights to dignity and personal liberty.

IGP Egbetokun stressed that the current police leadership is committed to a rights-based approach to law enforcement, aiming to balance effective policing with the protection of individual freedoms. He reaffirmed that upholding human rights is central to the force’s broader vision of professional and accountable policing.
