The Imo State Police Command has confirmed an explosion in Umuneke Community, Mbieri, within the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state. The blast occurred on Sunday, although no casualties were reported.
Speaking on a TV interview monitored by Radio Now’s Newsdesk, police spokesperson Henry Okoye said the cause of the explosion is under investigation. He added that the blast damaged a newly completed building that had not yet been occupied.
Mr. Okoye revealed that the Deputy Commissioner of Police and the Anti-Bomb Squad had visited the scene to ensure that there were no remaining explosives. The police are committed to finding those responsible and bringing them to justice.
Local residents told reporters the building was set to be moved into by its owners next month. They described hearing a loud explosion overnight and later discovering the structure had been completely destroyed.
