INEC Denies Claims of Stopping Over 7 million Nigerians From Completing Voter Registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied claims that it did not give some Nigerians the opportunity to complete their online voter pre-registration.

Festus Okoye, INEC national commissioner, information and voter education committee, in a statement released yesterday, said over seven million persons did not complete their voter registrations.

INEC says over 8.8 million people completed their registration in person while 3.4 million started their registration online and completed the process at a physical center.

Mr. Okoye says the Commission provided weekly statistical updates on the exercise in the interest of transparency, stressing that no Nigerians were deliberately denied the opportunity to complete their online pre-registration.

He appealed to citizens to always adhere to timelines and avoid what he described as the endless agitation for the eleventh-hour extensions of set deadlines.

Following the suspension of the continuous voter registration (CVR) on July 31, INEC had said the number of persons who completed their registration is 12,298,944.
