The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, has said the electoral body has the capacity to conduct local government elections in the country if provided with necessary resources.
He stated this on Thursday when he appeared before the National Assembly Joint Committee on the INEC and Electoral Committees.
Reacting to questions from members of the National Assembly joint panel on the position of the commission on the Supreme Court verdict regarding the financial autonomy for local government areas, Yakubu affirmed that the umpire can handle LG elections.
Yakubu raised concerns on the need for the National Assembly to amend the relevant law to empower INEC for such responsibility.

He also spoke to the funding challenges the Commission faces in the conduct of its duties.
