The Independent National Electoral Commission has registered two new political parties, the Democratic Leadership Alliance and the Nigeria Democratic Congress. The announcement was made on Thursday in Abuja by the INEC chairman, Joash Amupitan, at the commission’s first regular consultative meeting with political parties.
Mr Amupitan said the registrations followed a rigorous assessment process after INEC received 171 letters of intent from associations seeking recognition. He said 14 groups passed the initial pre-qualification stage, while eight successfully uploaded their documents for further consideration.
According to the INEC chairman, only the Democratic Leadership Alliance met all constitutional and Electoral Act requirements after final assessment and verification. He said the commission therefore approved its registration as a political party.

Mr Amupitan added that the Nigeria Democratic Congress was registered in compliance with an order of the Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja, Kogi State. He said certificates of registration would be issued to both parties in due course.
