The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the petition to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, citing failure to meet constitutional requirements. INEC stated on Thursday that the petition did not secure the necessary number of signatures from registered voters.
According to INEC’s National Commissioner, Sam Olumekun, Section 69(a) of the 1999 Constitution requires a recall petition to be signed by more than half of the lawmaker’s constituency. With Kogi Central having 474,554 registered voters, at least 237,278 signatures were needed. However, the petitioners submitted 208,132, falling short of the threshold.

The recall move followed Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension from the Senate for alleged misconduct, with some constituents pushing for her removal. However, the senator has remained defiant, accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim he has denied.
Despite her suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan received a rousing welcome in Kogi on Tuesday, where she addressed supporters in Okehi Local Government Area, reaffirming her commitment to serving her people.
